Environment and Sustainability

27.08.2020

Our goal is for the federal city of Bonn to be climate-neutral by 2035 and for the urban infrastructure to be designed to be energy-efficient and sustainable by then. We want to gradually replace fossil fuels and raw materials in all areas with renewable energies and renewable resources.

We want to achieve this goal with the following measures:

We are committed to a multi-stage master plan that builds on the previous specifications and decisions of the City Council (Stadtrat).

We are committed to expanding funding opportunities for energy-efficient and climate-adapted construction, to ensuring that the relevant funding paths are transparent and that applications are processed quickly so that they do not impede construction projects but actually encourage them.

We will continue to support institutions of environmental education, such as the "Haus der Natur", in the future and expand them into a point of contact, especially for young people. We will also continue to strengthen the City’s Environmental Office so that it gets greater influence as well as the necessary competence and assertiveness in prioritising the sustainability aspect and climate adaptation in all areas and topics of administration.

We support Stadtwerke Bonn (SWB) in the expansion and upgrading of local energy networks, the expansion of 100 percent renewable energies and the switch to emission-free buses by 2030.

We will continue to support the work of the Bonn Energy Agency. As a city, we would like to promote the further development of the solar roof cadastre, we want to support the installation of balcony solar systems, and also operate photovoltaic systems on the roofs of municipal buildings ourselves. The use of geothermal energy should also be considered.

As an essential component of the energy transformation, we will further develop the city's waste recycling plant and the connected combined heat and power plant to reduce emissions. We also aim to enter the methanol and hydrogen production sector as a pilot project.

We will care for, preserve and protect street trees, avenues and inner-city green spaces, such as the Meßdorfer Feld. In addition, we will ensure that public spaces, both in the city centre and in the district and subdistrict centres, are better greened. We are committed to planting 1,000 new, indigenous, climate-resilient trees every year. Additional staff must be hired for care and maintenance in the relevant offices of the municipal administration. In case, trees need to be felled in the course of construction projects, compensatory planting should take place on the city's territory, ideally in the immediate vicinity of the construction project. We will also promote and support urban gardening projects.

We will continue to develop the sewage treatment plants in Bonn in an environmentally friendly and future-oriented manner. This includes the early introduction of additional treatment stages (to remove trace substances, microplastics/medicines) as well as a climate-friendly disposal of sewage sludge and phosphorus recycling.

For us flood protection includes the renaturation of as many streams and watercourses as possible in the city of Bonn and the local rainwater infiltration. We will provide more support for catastrophe protection organisations and will show appreciation for voluntary work in particular. In the area of energy savings and climate adaptation measures, we are committed to the energy-related renovation of municipal buildings, including the renewal of heating systems, the installation of motion detectors in all municipal buildings, the conversion of street lighting to LED operation and the smart control of interior and exterior lighting.
